In pursuit of Objective One, WDN-U implemented targeted capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the leadership effectiveness of women and youth councilors. These interventions enhanced participants’ understanding of democratic leadership, policy engagement, and strategic political participation. In preparation for the 2026 general elections, WDN-U also delivered specialized training for women and youth aspirants, equipping them with practical skills and knowledge to improve their electoral competitiveness.
From January 10–11 2025, WDN-U conducted a training on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and electoral preparedness for 30 women councilors of Masaka City, following an invitation from the Mayor of Masaka City. The training strengthened participants’ knowledge of the women’s movement, reinforced the importance of women’s participation in decision-making including contesting for open seats and built key competencies in governing with positive impact on citizens.


Candidates’ training- In 2025, WDN-U strengthened the preparedness and electoral competitiveness of women and youth candidates through targeted capacity-building initiatives. On January 17 2025, the Executive Director trained Democratic Party women’s league prospective candidates from Kampala, Wakiso, and Jinja on public speaking, campaign strategy, and fundraising for the 2026 elections. Between 24–26 February, WDN-U shared FAQs with 10 women leagues and four CSO partners from Kumi, Moyo, Koboko, and Arua City, equipping aspiring candidates with essential knowledge on the election cycle and winning strategies.
From April 1–2 2025, WDN-U conducted a training for 27 district and sub-county women and youth councilors in Jinja, District focusing on goal setting, campaign planning, resource mobilization, and messaging. Prior to the end of the training participants developed actionable plans to reduce electoral violence and commercialization, enhancing women and youth participation in the 2026 elections



From May 26–27 2025, WDN-U together with its district member organization partner West Nile Women’s Advocacy Platform Executive Director trained 22 women candidates in Arua City and Koboko District ahead of the 2026 elections. The training enhanced participants’ knowledge and skills on the political landscape, electoral legal frameworks, gender empowerment, fundraising, and community engagement, personal development, campaign management and communication skills directly supporting increased women’s representation in local and national governance. Following the election in 2026, WDN-U assessed the data on the number of candidates who successfully won election, 50% of the candidates who benefited from the training won election in Arua city while 80% won election and re-election in Koboko district.
From July 8th – 9th 2025, WDN-U Executive Director on invitation by KIC’s Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA) trained 35 youth politicians from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania on Gender and Politics. The training enhanced their capacity to identify barriers to youth participation and develop strategies to strengthen engagement in political processes within their parties and elections


From July 20th – 23rd 2025, WDN-U and IWOP established and trained regional Interparty Women Platform (IWOP) structures in Northern and Eastern Uganda. The structures selected their leadership and developed action plans to guide ongoing advocacy and follow up activities.




From August 3–5 2025, WDN-U and IWOP facilitated the establishment and training of the Western Region Interparty Women Platform (IWOP) structure, strengthening regional women’s political leadership and coordination.


On 27 August 2025, WDN-U and IWOP established and trained the Eastern Region Interparty Youth Platform (IYOP) in Soroti. The structure selected its leadership and developed an action plan and set up communication channels


August 17–22 2025, WDN-U, in partnership with KIC, trained women and youth councilors from 25 districts ahead of the 2026 elections. The training enhanced their campaign skills, knowledge of election laws, dispute resolution, resource mobilization, digital campaigning, and ethical leadership, thereby strengthening their readiness for effective electoral participation. The participants drafted their campaign messages and budgets to support their campaigns and polling Day processes. Following the election in 2026, 64% of the candidates were elected including one who was a councilor as Member of Parliament of Nwoya county in Nwoya district.


From October 27th – 28th 2025, WDN-U trained young women candidates from the ruling party NRM, opposition political parties in Uganda to enhance their participation in politics and public life, strengthening their readiness and capacity to contest in the 2026 general elections.
